The Society arranges a programme of evening lectures, about nine each year.
These cover a wide range:
- The physical sciences: physics, all branches of engineering,
chemistry and materials science, geology, astronomy
- The life sciences: biology, medicine, agriculture, natural
history, ecology
- Mathematics: computing, information technology
- The social sciences: psychology, sociology, economics,
scientific history and management.
During the lifetime
of the Society some 200 lectures have been given. A selection
indicating the range of interests is given on the Past Event
page.
We aim to devote evenings equally to the sciences and their applications, for example in agriculture,
industry, transport, economic and social policy, health.
Each year the Society presents an event in association with the Lichfield Festival, held in
July, designed to bridge the gap between the two cultures of arts and science which has grown
up since Erasmus Darwin’s day.
Speakers are often of international standard. The flagship event is the annual ERASMUS DARWIN
MEMORIAL LECTURE in November, inaugurally supported by the Royal Society/British Association
Committee on the Public Understanding of Science (COPUS).
Visits, both summer and winter, are
arranged to places of scientific and technical interest.
The society has
forged links with local schools to promote interest in science
and engineering both in education and extra-curricular activities.
Social events include
the Annual Dinner in October and an informal supper in June.
