Description: Vitamin D was discovered a hundred years ago as a cure for rickets. Our knowledge of vitamin D has since increased dramatically, as an environmental factor (our skin generates it on exposure to light), a component of food and a hormone. Despite this, many people across the globe are vitamin D-deficient and rickets continues to be an issue for some children in the UK. This talk will explore the causes of vitamin D-deficiency and the benefits of vitamin D to health, including possible effects beyond the skeleton.
